The abdomen of the pregnant goldfish becomes heavier and full. The changes are much easy and clear to note on the male of the goldfish. The male develop breeding tubercles are white in color; the size may be about the head of a pin. The abdomen of the female goldfish is fuller and bulged.
When they are ready for breeding the male completes the ritual of spawning chase. The male swims behind the female goldfish nudge her again and again for several hours.
The female releases goldfish eggs in batches. These goldfish eggs are at once fertilized by the male by the spray of milt on them. It is normal for a female about three years old or at the prime to lay between five hundred and thousand eggs…
The eggs are laid in batches it is advised to wait until the laying of eggs is completed. As the goldfish eggs are fertilized, these can be removed immediately. These eggs have to be rinsed in water with the same temperature (about 20ÂșC). The goldfish eggs are then transferred to another goldfish aquarium which has the water of same temperature.
The depth of water should be upto six inches. The fish fry can swim up comfortably only at six inches as the water pressure is not more. The temperature of the water that contains goldfish eggs can be maintained by heater. It is advised to be watchful of the goldfish eggs at this stage. The eggs that look clearer are fertile, while furry looking are infertile eggs. The infertile can be attacked by fungus which will spread to fertile eggs.
Once the goldfish eggs are hatched they would sink to the bottom of the tank invariably. The translucent full yoke sac with the fish when hatched is enough for the fish fry to survive for twenty four hours. The fish fry need not be fed at first twenty four hours.
